I reserve the right to have folks I don't like (or that don't like me) on my "friends" list. Being on my friends list doesn't make you my friend, it means I want to read your journal. In corollary, not being on my friends list does not mean you aren't my friend. Don't ask to be "unfriended", and don't ask me to unfriend anyone else. Also note that I have no control over those I am a "friend of", as being on someone else's friends list may simply mean that they also, just want to read my journal. I thoroughly reject the spoon-fed semantics suggested by Livejournal's architects in favor the actual (quite) useful functionality they offer. Finding other uses for technologies aside from that originally intended by the authors is called hacking. I like that.

I am adding you as a friend...

It would be nice if you would do the same for me..

Although right now I am not appreciably on as many rants as I used to be... I am too busy trying to learn to be an engineer right now (I want my robot army of nazi superhumans to take over the world... Only problem is that they are all driven by lego mindstorm right now and my extension cords are not long enough yet)

Hey nate.. how do you do the cross-posting thing? Do you just copy/paste from your other blog onto LJ? Or do you somehow have it syndicated? Just curious.

Short story: [[http://wiki.splitbrain.org/wiki:dokuwiki dokuwiki]] RSS feed > rss2email > kmail filter script I wrote > charm LJ client > LJ

Long story: My blog is dokuwiki, which publishes an RSS feed. That's picked up by rss2email, my newsreader, which scans all my feeds and converts them to emails which are sent to my inbox in Kmail. I wrote a filter script in Kmail that sends the email message to a script that parses out the vitals and hands them to Charm, a command line Lj client written in Python, which finally posts it to LJ.

In short, I wrote a little bit of glue that connects a long chain of really cool applications. It works pretty well. :)

I agree with your post - one of the reasons I side stepped lj for a year.

I am being ill served by LJ - the recent DDOS attacks have left me as one of the users that can no longer get a post out via their own journal - no editing etc - from may 31st and previous - I can on the other hand post entries as comments to posts I have already made and as this to others...

the only feed back I have recieved is to be directed to their apology page and that we are working etc on the problem etc

is this yet another facebook tactic to get users to switch (smirk)??

I have a long-neglected paper on the subject.

http://n8o.r30.net/dokuwiki/doku.php/userfreedomandwebservices

All the proprietary vendors are solving the piracy problem by moving to online models, where code isn't available to copy. They keep control that way. LJ is an interesting case because they DO publish their code under an open license - thus deadjournal, greatestjournal, et al. But, of course, that doesn't stop them from being evil or stupid, and that's no consolation for wrongly struck-thru user accounts.

There are two solutions I can make out:
* open, standard //protocols// for interoperability between web services, or
* web services co-operatives, that more formally distribute their control democratically to members, rather than investors or advertisers.

My Teachers Three Kids

Tom meets his old math teacher John.
"Hello John, how old are your three children now?"
"Well, if you multiply their ages together you get 36, and, if you add their ages you get the number on that bus."
Tom is perplexed, so after a while John adds, "Oh! And the oldest plays the piano," at which point Tom is happy.

How old are the three children? What number is on the bus?

New Challenge:

You have ten boxes, numbered 1 to 10, each with 100 identical-looking coins; the coins in one box are counterfeit. The only measurable difference is that the box of bad coins weighs 5 grams less than the others. Using a very accurate scale, determine which box contains the bad coins. You are limited to one weighing on the scale!

Good catch. I hadn't seen this one.

1)

the factors of 36 are 2, 2, 3, and 3. Presuming we're only dealing with integers for aging, and that we have three kids, only one child's age can be composed of two of the factors (and no more), which means the oldest is either 4 (2x2), 6 (2x3), or 9 (3x3) years old.

I'll go out on a limb and say that the piano bit is important because 4 and 6 are too young to effectively play piano.

So ages, 9 + 2 + 2 = 14 people on the bus.

Any luck?

I'll think about the second one.

Bahahahah niiiiice

13 is the bus number the eldest is 9 playing a piano with twins thus the ... 1.6.6=13 makes leaves him preplexed till we note an oldest child plays the piano - so we can drop the second possibility - yes I believe you are correct - 'cept the minor addition - other than - good job - second question is a bit of a twister
